Haemodialysis Therapy Improves Sleep Quality

9 March 2010

NxStage System One, a daily home haemodialysis therapy being tested, could improve overall sleep quality as well as improve restless legs syndrome (RLS) after four months, a new study has found.

The FREEDOM study compared patients' responses to the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Sleep Survey and the International RLS Study Group Rating Scale (IRLS) at baseline and four months.

The study noted a positive impact of daily home haemodialysis on disorders affecting patients' quality of life and the overall sleep quality improved from baseline to month four.

Longer-term follow up is underway to determine whether the positive impact of daily home dialysis on sleep patterns and RLS persists at one year, according to physiciansnews.com.

The FREEDOM study is in progress to measure the clinical and economic benefits of daily home haemodialysis treatment, compared to conventional, thrice-weekly in-centre haemodialysis treatment for patients requiring dialysis therapy.
