More than 70,000 children attend emergency rooms each year due to injuries from medical devices, according to researchers from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Contact lenses caused about quarter of the injuries. Other causes include hypodermic needles, ear tubes, and pelvic devices, which cause pelvic tears during gynaecological examinations.
Serious problems were caused by implanted devices, such as brain shunts for kids, chest catheters for cancer patients and insulin pumps for diabetics.
Malfunctions and misuses are considered to be the possible reasons for the injuries.
Researchers are examining the reasons behind the injuries as part of an effort that could result in new FDA device warnings.
