Modulight, a privately held laser solutions provider based in Tampere, Finland, celebrates this week the ten-year anniversary of its lasers with a 35% sales growth in H1 2010 compared with the previous year. Many of the company’s long-term collaborators are expected to take part in the open house cocktail party organised on 27 August at Modulight’s headquarters in Tampere, Finland.
Modulight was established in 2000 to provide communications laser technology for short-reach applications. One of the first products, a uncooled 1,310nm 10Gb/s laser diode, was the first of its kind when released and still belongs to Modulight’s communications product portfolio. Later on, when the telecom market started to level off, Modulight was able to move fast and address new markets, which allowed the company to grow the business by 50%-100% annually over 2003-2008. Entering medical, defence and industrial markets was challenging but it proved to be the right strategy to pursue. An elemental part of the new strategy was the launch of high-power laser products around 2004 that was also recognised by a Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation award in 2005.
That year Modulight also established Modulight USA based in San Jose, CA, which was later nominated as an Emerging Laser Diode Company of the Year 2008 in North America. Along with the market diversification, Modulight has systematically built up capabilities and expertise for packaged and integrated laser solutions and is today one of the few companies globally to offer chip-to-system solutions over a broad wavelength range from 630nm to 1,650nm. Over the years the company has produced well over a million lasers and shipped them to four continents and over 20 countries.
The success of the company is attributed to the customers with whom Modulight has built trusted relationships and to its dedicated team, committed to company’s growth. “We would not be here with this bright future ahead without long-term partnerships with many of our customers and enthusiastic and committed team at Modulight. With the current technology portfolio and capabilities Modulight has we see a great opportunity for a double-digit continued growth over the coming years. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to all Modulight employees, customers and partners all over the world for contributing to the success of Modulight,” says Dr Petteri Uusimaa, president and CEO of Modulight.
