This project entailed injection moulding an optically clear polycarbonate (PC) moulded component for the ophthalmic market. The customer was using glass moulds and was exploring the idea of using a plastic replacement optic.
The plastic component needed to be moulded with very low levels of defects and inclusions, as imperfections, both on the surface and within the part, can replicate on the end product. Whereas glass moulds give excellent clarity, injection moulding optical parts in PC can be challenging to control flow lines, microscopic bubbles, and inclusions, such as airborne particles.
