The UK Trade and Investment Export Achievement Award

R5 Pharmaceuticals

“The annual MediLink UK Awards set out to celebrate the cutting-edge technologies and business achievements from UK pharmaceutical and medical device businesses from the past year.”

This Nottingham-based company has increased its export sales 100% in the last year by accessing three new markets. Comprehensive dosage formulation and evidence services are provided by the company across a variety of applications.

Its export boost was helped by winning a contract form the French Ministry of Research to carry out R&D work for French companies in the UK.

New customers have also been signed up by the company in New Zealand and Germany, and the expansion has seen it purchase a further 500m² of space at its Biocity site in the UK.

The Department of Business Innovations and Skills Growth in Sector Award

IntraHealth

Over the past two years IntraHealth increased its turnover and increased its staff from 101 to 300. The Peterlee-based firm supplies primary care services to 22 surgeries across the UK.

Last year it was announced IntraHealth would run two new GP practices in Sunderland, the Riverview Heath Centre in Hendon and the Pennywell Health Centre in Pennywell, and the Small Bridge Practice in Rochdale.

In 2008 three new surgeries were also opened in the Wigan area as well as one of the UK’s first privately run NHS surgeries in Hartlepool.

The NHS National Innovation Centre Partnership with the NHS Award

Invacare

In partnership with Dolby Medical and the NHS, this Cardiff-based company invented the HomeFill oxygen system, which allows patients to refill mobile cylinders from their own oxygen store while still using the device.

As well as removing the hassle of handling liquid oxygen containers, HomeFill also cut down on the production and transport cost of the traditional system.

Invacare business development manager for respiratory products Huw Roderick said the company was delighted to be recognised for its excellence and innovation

The MediLink UK Start-Up Award

InterVene

Sheffield-based InterVene has a turnover of more than £1.5m ($2.3m) since it started trading in 2008. Its success is due to the female Luer lock hypodermic syringe designed for oral and enteral delivery.

InterVene managing director Matt Root said everyone at the company had worked incredibly hard to make it a success in the current economic climate. The company’s next goal is to market its newest innovation, a non-luer spinal/epidural connection system.
