The Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) is offering UK companies the chance to participate in a variety of US-based activities designed to help them access the US market.

As the UK’s largest health technology association, ABHI has established relationships with a variety of health care systems in Texas and has connections across the West and East Coast of America.

The first visit is set to happen in September and will involve a trip to the AdvaMed MedTech Conference and a two-day tour of hospital systems in Philadelphia. ABHI says this will give delegates an opportunity to meet senior clinical and leadership teams. Attendees will be joining a group of senior healthcare organisations, including the AHSN’s and Medcity, plus companies like Health Enterprise East, SurgEase Innovations and Medovate.

The trip offered in October will involve a visit to ANESTHESIOLOGY 2018, followed by a tailored meeting programme which will introduce companies to major hospital systems and healthcare organisations around the San Francisco area, including Stanford Medicine.

UK companies already planning to attend include Penlon, P3 Medical, Lumeon, Pentland Medical and Directed Systems. Demand for places on this trip is high, with several companies already committed to both.

The ABHI’s seventh excursion will occur in November and will involve visits to major hospitals in Houston, Dallas and Austin and meetings with clinical leadings including those at the Dell Medical School, which incorporates ABHI’s own Innovation Hub.

ABHI associate director, international, David Phillips told Verdict Medical Devices: “Over the past years we’ve steadily grown our activity stateside. Taking a state-by-state approach, we have gradually expanded our programme across the country, developing a network of connections within local health systems that include clinical heads and c-suite leadership teams.

“Alongside that, we have cultivated relationships with Chambers of Commerce, key business groups and leading technology companies. Just last month we announced that we are seeking a second cohort of companies to enter our Innovation Hub at the Dell Medical School in Austin, and we are seeing a similar level of enthusiasm for our upcoming programme of activity over the coming months.”

The US visits have been designed for companies hoping to do business in America and have the aim of enhancing the growth of businesses and gaining returns on US investment.

When asked why the US market is so important for UK health technology companies, Phillips said: “When you look at the size and scale of the US, its technology-driven cities and world-class academia, it’s easy to see why many consider it the most prized health tech market in the world. Our members repeatedly identify it as a priority market, which is why the US is critical to our international strategy in helping UK companies with their export objectives.”

Due to the popularity of the networking schemes, ABHI is already planning more for the future.

Phillips added: “We’re just putting together the final touches to our 2019 international calendar of activity, in which the US will feature heavily. As well as Texas, where we have cultivated some fantastic relationships over the years, we’re also looking at opportunities to be had in the state of Tennessee.

“We are seeing firm interest from universities in the area and the broader Life Sciences community are particularly keen to engage, so that is certainly an area worth keeping an eye on.”

Grant funding of £2,000 is available for both the September and October US excursions, subject to eligibility, to help offset visit costs. Companies interested in attending should contact ABHI.
