Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD) has completed the acquisition of Scanwell Health to expand and scale digital at-home medical testing.

Previously, BD collaborated with Scanwell to develop an app which was used with its recently launched Veritor At-Home COVID-19 Test.

Claimed to be the first at-home Covid-19 test, Veritor uses a smartphone camera and app to capture and digitally interpret the test results, while eliminating the human subjectivity.

Scanwell will now become the foundational digital platform and BD intends to develop at-home diagnostic tests for a broad range of infectious diseases that include group A strep, Covid-19/influenza A+B.

BD will also create an additional menu to detect infections and manage chronic diseases.

BD life sciences president Dave Hickey said: “The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the shift to new care settings, and BD is ready to deliver a smart, connected at-home diagnostic ecosystem to support traditional and telehealth providers and consumers.

BD Veritor At-Home COVID-19 Test provides a definitive Positive or Negative digital display of the results.

The Scanwell app can also store and report the test results securely to organisations including public health authorities, schools, and businesses.

BD has not disclosed the financial details of the transaction.

In a separate development, BD announced that Embecta, which will hold the company’s Diabetes Care business after the planned spinoff, will be governed by a nine-person board of directors.
