Johnson & Johnson’s orthopaedics company, DePuy Synthes, has launched its VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution for knee replacement surgery in Australia.

VELYS is intended to be used with the company’s ATTUNE Knee System for total knee arthroplasty.

The latest development comes after the solution was included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

Johnson & Johnson Medical Australia and New Zealand managing director Sue Martin said: “Australia joins an exclusive list of just a few countries with access to this technology to date.

“The introduction of the VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution is testament to Johnson & Johnson Medical Device’s ongoing commitment to creating innovative technologies that help hospitals and surgeons improve patient outcomes and advance the sustainability of Australia’s healthcare system.”

Despite a higher number of surgeries adopting robotic assistance, the technology’s impact on operational effectiveness, including surgical time and technological learning curve, was observed to be a challenge, the company said.

VELYS is developed to address this challenge by offering a unique operating table-mounted solution that adjusts to the workflow of the surgeon as well as providing planning expertise.

The advanced design of the solution aids surgeons in precisely resecting bones that place the implant relative to the soft tissue in total knee replacement without requiring pre-operative imaging.

Furthermore, the effective and compact design can be incorporated into any operating room and features a reduced footprint of about half the size of various other robotic-assisted solutions, the company added.

The VELYS solution streamlines knee replacement surgery by offering insights on gap balance, which allow surgeons to visualise and forecast the stability of the joint.

In addition, the solution’s integrated design offers surgeons adaptable execution and improves daily operating room flow.

Ultimately, the solution’s precise plan execution allows ATTUNE Knee to deliver improved patient outcomes.

DePuy Synthes Australia vice-president Ben Travers said: “VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution works exclusively with the ATTUNE Knee System, which studies have shown can improve clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcomes, as well as contribute to a shorter length of stay in hospital.”

The company is also offering a suite of training solutions to help surgeons and hospitals implement the VELYS solution.
