Mobile health solutions provider Cosinuss claims its in-ear thermometer device could reduce the number of unnecessary doctors’ appointments and hospital visits by providing parents with a simple tool to monitor their child’s vital signs during illnesses.
The ear orientated technology company, originally based in Germany, launched this new product in London at the Wearable Health Technology Show 2018.
The device is named degree° and consists of a flexible in-ear thermometer for children and an assisting app which provides constant updates of the child’s temperature. The app also highlights potential treatment options by comparing the data of the continuous in-ear measurement with proven medical knowledge.
Cosinuss is marketing degree° as ‘a doctor in the pocket that monitors and combines the child’s vital data with evidence-based research to assist parents with recommendations, insights and best practices during a fever.’
Cosinuss founder and CEO Greta Kreuzer said: “The aim of the device is to tell you when you really need to go to the doctor’s. It can reassure you that it’s going to be fine.

There are guidelines to tell you when you need to go to the doctor’s and what the symptoms are that mean you need to go – kind of taking your hand and going with you through the process.”
Despite the reassurance capabilities of the app, Cosinuss admits that being able to control a fever at home is not always a reason to avoid seeking professional help. Kreuzer added: “There are situations when you need to see a doctor because it might be something serious, not the fever itself but the reason behind the fever.”
This is the first device Cosinuss has designed specifically for children so it aimed to make a wearable with the lowest radiation possible. The company based the concept on its adult ear device that is aimed at athletes who want to monitor their vital signs during exercise. Kreuzer said she was inspired to modify this product after her own child had a seizure due to a fever she thought was under control.
The main features of the device and app include a flexible, simple ear piece design that children can sleep in, app alarms that can alert users when a child’s temperature is too high or if the child has removed the device, a selection of treatment guides and a trackable graph of the device wearer’s health.
Kreuzer believes that degree° is something that healthcare professionals could use and recommend to families. However, the company is not looking to break into the medical professional market just yet as it currently lacks the connections and resources to do so, but hopes to develop these in the future.
