3D printing company Formlabs has announced the creation of a new dental-focused business unit.

Formlabs Dental will use the new Form 3B printer and its associated platform, which comes with a new range of dental materials, a dedicated service team and software to help streamline workflows.

The printer can be used to create numerous dental applications, including dentures, retainers, surgical guides, splints, casting and pressing patterns, crown and bridge models and diagnostic models.

Formlabs offers about ten dental materials that can be processed through the Form 3B printer, including an in-house developed biocompatible surgical guide resin. Formlabs is also offering four new shades for denture materials.

The company is also continuing to work on launching new print settings for its legacy Dental SG and Dental LT materials as well as improving existing ones.

The adoption of 3D printing within the dental industry has increased significantly since the release of Formlabs’ Form 2 printer, which brought down the cost of entry significantly, said SmileMaker Orthodontics orthodontist Dr Jay Burton.

Formlabs CEO and co-founder Max Lobovsky said: “Our new Form 3B printer is uniquely tailored to seamlessly digitize, streamline and expedite workflow so dentists and technicians can focus on providing patients with the outcomes they expect and deserve.

“We have already touched the lives of over hundreds of thousands of patients, having printed 13 million dental parts on the Form 2 and, with the launch of Form 3B, aim to expand that reach even further to ensure all dental care providers can bring an exceptional level of attention to their patients.”

The accompanying Formlabs Dental Service Plan allows Form 3B users to access personalised in-person or video training, as well as priority email and phone support with dental specialists and access to hot swapping printers for nonstop production.

Burton said: “The incredibly accurate Form 3B produces crisp and consistent dental parts and Dental Service Plan provides the confidence to go digital.”

The company is also launching the Formlabs Materials Partner Platform for the Form 3B, which allows third-party manufacturers to work together with Formlabs to make their materials available on the Form 3B.
