GE Healthcare is set to acquire Swedish start-up Prismatic Sensors in an effort to expand its portfolio in photon-counting CT (PCCT) technology.

This technology can potentially set a base for a new standard of care in oncology, cardiology, neurology and many other clinical CT applications.

Using this method, the detector will be deep enough to absorb very high energy photons and can count hundreds of millions of CT photons per second.

GE Healthcare president and CEO Kieran Murphy said: “We believe this technology has the potential to be a substantial step forward for CT imaging to establish a new standard of care and eventually improve clinical outcomes for millions of patients worldwide.

“We are excited about this cutting-edge approach with Deep Silicon and its clinical potential.”

GE Healthcare anticipates closing of the deal by January.

Prismatic Sensors CEO Mats Danielsson said: “Our research shows Deep Silicon is the best solution for photon-counting CT to meet clinical requirements.

“Silicon-based detectors will enable superior spectral resolution without compromising on count rate or spatial resolution.”

The companies have not divulged the terms and financial details of the acquisition.

Founded in 2012, Prismatic Sensors is a spin-off from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden.
