The winners of the 2018 Edison Best New Product Awards unveiled earlier this week include several medical technology companies. Among the numerous winning technologies with healthcare applications, the following stood out as particularly innovative.
Researchers from Ohio State University won silver in the Cellular Research category for their Tissue Nanotransfection technology. The device can switch cell function to rescue failing body functions with a single touch. It does this by injecting genetic code into skin cells and turning those skin cells into a different type of cell to treat certain diseases.

In the Diagnostics Systems category, Natera won gold with its Signatera product, which is the first cancer diagnostic test using ctDNA technology personalised for every patient’s tumour. The company aimed to answer key clinical questions with this test including: Is the patient responding to treatment? Is the patient at high risk of recurrence? Is the patient disease-free at the molecular level post-treatment?
Another gold medal-winning company was Olympus Corporation of the Americas in the Digital Imaging category. The company’s ORBEYE device can create precise 4K-3D digital images, enabling more accurate surgery by providing high-resolution 3D imaging of the structure of features such as tissue and blood vessels.
Also amongst the Digital Imaging category winners was GE Healthcare with its mammography system, Senographe Pristina. The system is designed to be more comfortable for patients as it has rounded edges on the image detector and armrests rather than handlebars. A total of 83% of patients rated their experience with this machine as better than previous exams. It also features the industry’s first wireless remote control that allows patients to control their breast compression during the mammogram.
There were two bronze medals awarded in the Medical Innovations category, to Mobilize Rescue Systems and NovoCure. Mobilize Rescue Systems won for its Mobilize Rescue System, a trauma and medical emergency device that gives untrained bystanders the potential to save lives whilst the emergency services are en route to an incident. It involves an app and organised supplies which aims to give civilian bystanders ‘just-in-time’ training to assess, manage, and monitor severe bleeding, airway issues, and more.
