Irish medical device giant Medtronic has partnered with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in the US to transform and enhance patient care in the region.

The five-year project will focus on solutions to improve health outcomes and reduce costs. It will initially address chronic diseases and acute conditions that are prevalent in South Carolina.

In the initial programme, Medtronic and MUSC will work to standardise a comprehensive vascular disease care pathway in the continuum of patient care.

“The five-year project will focus on solutions to improve health outcomes and reduce costs. It will initially address chronic diseases and acute conditions that are prevalent in South Carolina.”

This is expected to result in a model that will enable the earlier identification and treatment of patients with vascular disease. The model will also be designed for follow-up care.

In addition, the partners plan to implement a standardised care pathway for joint replacement patients.

The episodic care pathway will target the bundled payment methodology by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It is intended to facilitate best practices and optimise processes to boost the quality of patient care while minimising costs.

Medtronic and MUSC will also focus on care pathways to decrease adverse events and optimise care for those who could benefit from enhanced respiratory monitoring or require a tracheostomy for breathing assistance.

MUSC president David Cole said: “The mutual goal of our organisations is to deliver the best patient outcomes at the lowest cost possible. That’s the true meaning of value-based health care.

“Through our collaborative partnership, we plan to combat chronic disease and address community health needs in South Carolina and beyond.”

According to statistics, more than three million people in South Carolina have at least one chronic disease. It is estimated that the total cost of chronic disease in the region between 2016 and 2030 will be $687bn.

Medtronic chairman and CEO Omar Ishrak said: “The partnership with MUSC is an extension of that collaboration, as we look to systematically work together to develop scalable programs aimed at improving patient outcomes while reducing the cost of care.”

In August last year, MUSC collaborated with Siemens Healthineers to develop a blueprint of a health care system that offers safe, timely, effective and patient-centred care.

The university and Medtronic intend to explore opportunities to cross-share findings with their respective partners.
