Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has expanded its current range of ENSEAL devices, with the launch of a new sealing device ENSEAL X1 Large for jaw tissue.

Designed to improve surgeons' efficiency and comfort, the new device is indicated for use in open general, gynecologic, urologic, thoracic and vascular procedures such as colectomies and hysterectomies.

Equipped with the Ethicon generator's adaptive tissue technology, the device is claimed to offer better hemostasis through less bleeding, better tissue management through less thermal spread, in addition to better ergonomics.

Ethicon company group chairman Michael del Prado said: "ENSEAL X1 is the latest example of how Ethicon is advancing technology to give surgeons greater control, access, and accuracy during surgical procedures in an effort to improve outcomes for patients."

With a larger distal electrode surface area, the device was found to have 88% less bleeding in thick tissue and 41% less thermal spread, when compared to LigaSure Impact.

It also features a separate seal and is cut functionally with convenient control placement to enable less hand movement, as well as allows 360° shaft rotation to enhance access to targeted tissue.

Compatible with the existing Ethicon GEN11 Generator, the new device can replace other products or offer an alternative to current Ethicon advanced bipolar devices.

The firm's portfolio of advanced energy devices include HARMONIC ultrasonic and ENSEAL advanced bipolar products and MEGADYNE core electrosurgical tools.
