NuVasive has commercially introduced its 3D-printed porous titanium implant, Modulus ALIF, for anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) procedures in some targeted international regions.

The device is the new product in the company’s Advanced Materials Science (AMS) portfolio.

A low-profile implant, Modulus ALIF is developed for implants and instrumentation in supine as well as lateral ALIF (XALIF) procedures.

Modulus ALIF will be made available in various sizes and lordotic options to fit different patient anatomies.

NuVasive global business units executive vice-president Massimo Calafiore said: “Modulus ALIF has been one of NuVasive’s most successful clinical evaluations to date, with continued surgeon adoption and overwhelmingly positive feedback.

“This differentiated technology furthers our position to become the market leader in ALIF and extends our Modulus portfolio across all procedural segments.”

The new implant has a Modulus titanium design to improve osseointegration, biomechanical and imaging properties.

Its porous surface architecture can aid fusion as well as increase new on-growth and in-growth of bone.

As against the solid titanium implants, the new device’s design facilitates better visualisation.

Furthermore, Modulus ALIF has a zero-step locking mechanism to offer absolute tactile and visual validation. This allows surgeons to confidently place screws in the implant, NuVasive noted.

The implant’s instrumentation is said to have low-profile and versatile properties to boost the efficiency of operating room workflow.

NuVasive added that it is working on expanding innovation and clinical validation of X360, a lateral approach to single-position procedures that comprises XLIF, XALIF and XFixation.

According to a recent study published in World Neurosurgery, single-position surgery offered enhanced benefits versus dual-position lumbar fusion, the company said.

This data showed that reduced operating times and hospital stays were more common in single-position procedures without compromising clinical outcomes.

In February, NuVasive acquired Simplify Medical, which develops the Simplify Cervical Artificial Disc for cervical total disc replacement, in a deal valued at $150m.
