UK-based Cambridge Consultants has developed a Pebal device for providing instant cooling effects and on-demand relief to women suffering from menopausal hot flushes.
The device is designed to release a small coolant dose onto the internal surface of a metal plate, in turn generating a cold external surface that can be applied to any body part.
To be available as a flexible hand-held product, Pebal is said to eliminate the need for charging and allows on-demand use.
Cambridge Consultants intends to work with various partners to develop additional products for women’s health.

The development of the Pebal device was based on feedback from menopausal women who participated in three workshops conducted by Cambridge Consultants in partnership with Newcastle University.
Findings indicated the need for a new range of products and self-help technology to tackle the hot flushes and night sweats that are said to impact physical, psychological and social wellbeing.
Of all the options, including drug-based methods and cooling pillows, the majority of the participants preferred a drug-free consumer device integrated with cooling consumables and can deliver immediate relief.
Newcastle University National Innovation Centre for Ageing professor Michael Catt said: “This exploration of ideas leading to the Pebal concept, in partnership with Open Lab, offers hope to thousands of women living with menopause, and we are delighted to have supported Cambridge Consultants in this exploration.”
