Royal Philips has entered an agreement to buy the healthcare information systems business of Carestream Health.

Carestream Health is a medical imaging solutions provider that offers IT for hospitals, imaging centres and speciality medical clinics. The company’s Cloud-based enterprise imaging platform is expected to support Philips’ existing radiology informatics portfolio.

Carestream’s presence across Latin America, Europe and Asia is set to complement Philips’ radiology informatics footprint in North America.

Royal Philips precision diagnosis chief business leader Robert Cascella said: “The combination of our successful innovations in imaging system platforms, workflow optimisation and artificial intelligence-enabled informatics, combined with Carestream’s Cloud-based enterprise imaging informatics platform and complementary geographic footprint, will provide a solid foundation to deliver on the promise of precision diagnosis.”

“The acquisition is expected to provide customers with access to a broader portfolio of healthcare IT solutions.”

The company’s enterprise imaging solutions combine clinical and informatics expertise with innovative technology. They are designed to securely connect patients, care teams and data across health systems.

Philips’ visualisation and analysis applications leverage adaptive intelligence to provide clinical insights and improve collaboration among clinical teams at point-of-care.

The acquisition is expected to provide customers with access to a broader portfolio of healthcare IT solutions for simplified medical image management and better patient care.

Subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the deal is expected to be completed in the second half of this year.

Following completion, Carestream’s platform will become part of Philips portfolio, including the Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA), diagnostic and enterprise viewers, and business analytics tools.

The Healthcare Information Systems business and its 900 employees will be integrated into the Philips’ Diagnosis & Treatment unit.
