Royal Philips has expanded its peripheral vascular disease portfolio with the launch of the QuickClear mechanical thrombectomy system.

The single-use system features an all-in-one aspiration pump and catheter for removing blood clots from the vessels of the peripheral arterial and venous systems.

It eliminates the requirement for capital equipment or expensive accessories while enabling faster procedures times, the company noted.

Philips added that the newly launched system will simplify the complete thrombectomy procedure workflow.

Due to its small footprint, the device can be placed conveniently on a table next to the patient. It can be turned on and accelerated to run at maximum aspiration power in seconds by simply using a button.

During the procedure, the consistency of the aspiration power helps physicians to have better control and supports faster procedure times, the company noted.

QuickClear’s range of catheters includes a large 10F aspiration catheter. It offers a 59% increased aspiration volume compared to 8F aspiration catheters.

Philips Image Guided Therapy Devices senior vice-president and general manager Chris Landon said: “This novel thrombectomy system is the latest addition to Philips’ market-leading portfolio for the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral vascular diseases.

“Its intuitive design simplifies the entire thrombectomy procedure workflow. By taking away the high initial capital expenditure costs associated with traditional mechanical thrombectomy systems, QuickClear can help bring cost-effective solutions to both the hospital and outpatient care settings.”

The Philips QuickClear Mechanical Thrombectomy System was granted Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance and is available for sale in the US.

Last month, Philips acquired US-based medical devices company Intact Vascular, which specialises in minimally invasive peripheral vascular procedures, for an upfront cash consideration of $275m.
