The retail partnership will allow Walgreens to make Quidel’s non-prescription QuickVue at-home over-the-counter (OTC) Covid-19 tests available at 7,600 Walgreens stores in the US and Puerto Rico.

Moreover, consumers will also have the option to order the shelf-stable packages online at Walgreens.com for store pick-up or same-day delivery.

Each package contains two of the self-administered rapid antigen tests.

Quidel president and CEO Douglas Bryant said: “This retail collaboration with Walgreens will expedite in-store availability and over-the-counter sales of our QuickVue at-home OTC Covid-19 antigen tests to consumers nationwide.”

Although the QuickVue at-home OTC Covid-19 test has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it can be used under the FDA’s emergency use authorisation.

In a press statement, Quidel said: “The QuickVue at-home Covid-19 test shows excellent performance, with positive results agreeing with PCR 83.5% of the time, and negative results agreeing 99.2% of the time, delivering confidence to individuals running the test and helping to prevent asymptomatic virus spread.”

Last month, Quidel signed a distribution and fulfilment agreement with McKesson to improve access to the QuickVue at-home OTC COVID-19 test for consumers.

McKesson will serve as the lead commercial partner for Quidel’s at-home OTC COVID-19 rapid antigen test orders.

Using the QuickVue OTC Covid-19 test, consumers can get highly accurate results in ten minutes or less from nasal swab samples, Quidel said.
