Siemens Healthineers has announced a worldwide partnership with Israeli firm Healthy.io to improve kidney disease monitoring by enabling at-home urine testing.

Under the partnership, Siemens’ urinalysis reagents will be integrated into the smartphone-based urinalysis system developed by Healthy.io.

The Healthy.io system leverages a urinalysis dipstick that measures ten parameters associated with various infections, chronic illnesses and pregnancy-related complications.

“Under the partnership, Siemens’ urinalysis reagents will be integrated into the smartphone-based urinalysis system developed by Healthy.io.”

Patients can scan the dipstick using their smartphone camera. Healthy.io embedded computer vision and machine learning in its system to accurately read the results and deliver them to patient’s clinician via an app.

Healthy.io founder and CEO Yonatan Adiri said: “Healthy.io is a pioneer in using computer vision and machine learning to transform the smartphone camera into a clinical grade medical device for improved patient access and convenience.”

Estimates reveal 8%-10% of the adults globally suffer from some type of kidney damage.

If left untreated, chronic kidney disease (CKD) can result in kidney failure and potentially increase the risk of death due to related heart conditions. To avoid such challenges, regular monitoring is required.

Periodic urine testing is commonly performed in a clinician’s office to monitor kidney function but this is often considered a time-consuming process.

Siemens and Healthy.io expect the new at-home testing option to be convenient for patients, thereby improve compliance with CKD monitoring.

Siemens Healthineers Point of Care Diagnostics executive vice-president Christoph Pedain said: “This alliance expands our capabilities to improve patient experience by conducting testing in their home.

“Increased access to albumin-to-creatinine ratio testing, whether at home or at the physician’s office, is critical to reducing the economic burden of chronic disease and to improving patient outcomes.”
