UK-based medical technology company Smith+Nephew has launched CORI Surgical System, a handheld robotics platform.

The company has also launched Real Intelligence brand, enabling technology solutions.

The CORI surgical platform is a surgeon-controlled handheld robotics system, currently available for unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty.

It helps place and size the implant and balance gaps based on patient-specific anatomy and disease condition.

Moreover, the platform features camera technology that enables fast and efficient cutting technology to facilitate faster robotic surgical procedure.

Due to its small size and portability, CORI surgical is suitable for ambulatory surgery centres (ASCs) and outpatient surgery.

Additionally, its modular design allows it to be used across the orthopaedic service line.

The company plans to develop additional applications for the robotics platform, which received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Smith+Nephew’s Real Intelligence is designed to address the spectrum of care, including patient engagement, pre-operative planning, digital and robotic surgery, post-operative assessment and outcomes measurement.

Each solution in the Real Intelligence digital ecosystem informs the next phase of treatment. It is expected to help healthcare providers to design patient-specific treatments, using outcomes data over time.

Smith+Nephew Orthopaedics president Skip Kiilsaid: “The Real Intelligence brand is a statement of how Smith+Nephew thinks, innovates and reimagines surgery.

“The introduction of the CORI Surgical System’s handheld robotics, patient engagement tools and outcomes measurement are the very first steps in a long-term strategy to advance orthopaedics, using technology.”

In a separate development, medical imaging artificial intelligence (AI) specialist Avicenna.AI received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its CINA Head triage AI solution for neurovascular emergencies.

The clearance covers CINA’s automatic detection capabilities for both intracranial haemorrhage (ICH) and large vessel occlusion (LVO) from CT-scan imaging.

It automatically detects and prioritises acute ICH and LVO cases under 20 seconds and alerts the radiologist within their current systems and workflow.

Avicenna.AI  radiologist and co-founder Dr Peter Chang said: “When dealing with a stroke, time is of the essence and being able to prioritise effectively is critical to saving lives and improving outcomes. Not only does CINA Head help radiologists to identify pathologies quickly, but also to highlight those that require the most urgent care.”
