Canon opens up patents to tackle Covid-19

By Chloe Kent

Canon has joined the Covid-19 Countermeasure Declaration as a founding member, pledging not to enforce its intellectual property rights against the development, manufacturing and associated activities of projects designed to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Entities who join Canon in signing the declaration pledge that they will not assert their patents, utility models, designs or copyrights during the crisis against any Covid-19 related developments.

Eliminating the need for the complicated and time-consuming process of negotiating intellectual property rights is intended to clear the way for the fastest possible development and deployment of these vital tools.
