Coronavirus company news summary – MP Biomedicals Asia Pacific develops Covid-19 antibody test – FDA expands use of LabCorp Covid-19 RT-PCR Test for asymptomatic people

By Chloe Kent

MP Biomedicals Asia Pacific, in partnership with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) has developed a rapid antibody test kit for Covid-19 coronavirus. The ASSURE SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM rapid test identifies antibodies produced by the immune system in response to SARS-CoV-2 using a lateral flow mechanism. The test can provide results in 15 minutes.

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur researchers have developed a portable rapid diagnostic device to detect Covid-19. It uses extracted RNA from saliva samples to test for the virus and is expected to make testing for Covid-19 affordable for the under-served communities, as it can be carried out in a low-cost portable enclosure. The university has stated that it has not produced false results and offers accuracy and sensitivity comparable to standard RT-PCR tests.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reissued the Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) of LabCorp‘s Covid-19 RT-PCR Test to include two new indications. The FDA has added the testing for asymptomatic people and those who have no reason to suspect infection. Additionally, it has also included pooled sample testing in the EUA.

MediPines has won the Covid-19 edition of the ‘Make Your Medical Device Pitch for Kids!’ competition, which is presented by the US National Capital Consortium for Paediatric Device Innovation. The competition focused on innovations in paediatric medical devices related to Covid-19 which would boost children’s healthcare. The MediPines Gas Exchange Monitor, AGM100 is a respiratory monitoring system that will be used to quickly assess respiratory status in a non-invasive manner.
