Medical devices manufacturer Covidien has announced the launch of the Capnostream 20p bedside monitor, which offers enhanced features for increasing patient safety in hospitals.

Incorporating Covidien's Microstream technology, the Capnostream 20p bedside monitor alerts caregivers to repetitive patterns of apneas and oxygen desaturation, providing a more complete picture of a patient's respiratory status.

Capnostream 20p includes the Apnea-Sat Alert algorithm, which measures and reports apnea and oxygen desaturation events and calculates the associated apnea per hour and oxygen desaturation index for adult patients.

Apnea-Sat Alert technology is a part of the broader range of Smart Alarm Management integrated algorithms and is engineered to enhance the use of CO2 monitoring on Microstream-enabled products to improve patient safety and clinical workflow.

The Smart Alarm Management integrated algorithms family includes Smart Breath Detection technology, Smart Alarm for Respiratory Analysis technology, Nellcor SatSeconds technology, and Integrated Pulmonary Index algorithm.

Further differentiated by the Microstream-enabled microMediCO2 module measurement bench, the Capnostream 20p bedside monitor offers easy integration into host monitor configurations and is designed to support future smart capnography algorithms without requiring hardware upgrades.

Covidien's Microstream technology has been assisting clinicians in obtaining accurate, continuous view of ventilation adequacy on intubated and non-intubated patients from neonate to adult since the last two decades.

Covidien Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions chief medical officer Scott Kelley said: "The Capnostream 20p bedside monitor will help increase apnea detection rates and represents an important advancement in continuous patient monitoring that we believe will help save lives."

The company has designed the Capnostream 20p bedside monitor for use in all hospital areas including paediatric intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, during sedation procedures and to monitor patients on patient-controlled analgesia.

The monitor complies with International Organization for Standardization alarm standards and can be used across all care settings.
