Siemens Healthcare has received FDA clearance for its Somatom Perspective computed tomography (CT) scanner, designed to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
The new 128-slice CT scanner, intended for community hospitals, critical access hospitals and outpatient centres, is engineered to deliver high image quality and low radiation dose for all customers.
Siemens Healthcare CT vice president, Kulin Hemani, said that the Somatom Perspective CT system provides a high level of patient care at a low total cost of ownership for all customers.
"Siemens designed the Somatom Perspective with customers' critical needs in mind, offering user-friendly features that expand the clinical portfolio, improve uptime and help enable efficient utilisation, as well as significant patient dose savings," Hemani added.
Sinogram Affirmed Iterative Reconstruction (SAFIRE), a method for iterative CT image reconstruction based on raw data, is used as a standard option on the Somatom Perspective.
SAFIRE may reduce CT patient dose by up to 60% compared to previous filtered back projection techniques, depending on the clinical task, patient size, anatomical location and clinical practice.
SAFIRE, which can be used in daily clinical routines, has a reconstruction speed of up to 15 images a second, according to the company.
The Somatom Perspective has an eMode feature to determine and automatically select system scan parameters, an illumination moodlight with adjustable LED panel to brighten the atmosphere of many exam rooms, and an alternative temporal resolution improvement method.
The new device simplifies and automates complex procedures with the help of Fully Assisting Scanner Technologies, consequently supporting clinical personnel at each stage of the CT examination.
The Somatom Perspective, in combination with detector coverage of 3.8cm, can scan long ranges and can potentially image all body regions, expanding clinical capabilities, claims the company.
