UK researchers produce ‘pop-up tent’ to protect clinicians from Covid-19

By Chloe Kent

A UK team of researchers, clinicians and medical device experts have designed a new piece of protective equipment to help prevent the transmission of Covid-19 from patients to medical staff.

The Aerosol Shield is a clear, disposable miniature pop-up tent that covers a patient’s head, neck and shoulder-level chest area. It is designed to reduce exposure to Covid-19 during procedures such as intubation, resuscitation, ventilation and any other intervention that requires medical staff to be close to the patient’s face by preventing the spread of cough droplets through the air. The shield has self-closing access points, allowing easy hand access in and around the patient’s airway.

The developers are now in discussions with distributors to ensure the equipment is available for purchase by the NHS and other healthcare providers and are seeking investment to enable rapid scaling and adoption.
