US-based Abbott has secured approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for its FreeStyle Precision Pro Blood Glucose and Beta-Ketone Monitoring System, a device that will help hospitals in managing their patients’ glucose levels.
The system offers a dual-band wireless access to quick test results for hospitals, while reducing the test strip risk of cross-contamination of blood and bacteria.
Abbott Diabetes Care senior vice-president Heather L Mason said that the FreeStyle Precision Pro system represented a step forward as the firm works to provide tools to improve the way hospitals manage patients’ glucose levels.
"It makes the data available in real time, thanks to the meter’s new wireless capabilities," Mason said. "With its individually foil-wrapped test strips, the system is also designed to help reduce test strip cross-contamination in hospital environments."
Abbott’s FreeStyle Precision Pro system uses individually foil-wrapped test strips to reduce the risk of cross-contamination, which helps hospitals in complying with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines on protection of unused supplies.
According to FDA requirements, medical devices need to be cleaned and disinfected after each use and the new system conforms to this requirement; it comes with a replaceable strip port that can be removed and replaced onsite.
In addition, within the hospital’s Wi-Fi-enabled network, it allows dual-band, real time wireless communication between the handheld metre at the patient bedside and the hospital information system, in turn providing clinical staff with immediate access to test results that will help them in taking quicker decisions on what kind of further treatment is to be given to patients.
The company claims that it is designed in a way that clinical operators need not interrupt their busy workflow even while conducting regular docking or attaching a data cable to download patient results.
It also comes with new algorithm feature to correct hematocrit interference, and reads newer 2D barcodes, enhancing the accuracy of patient identification.
