Lumenis, a developer of medical laser equipment for the surgical and ophthalmology markets, has announced plans to introduce a new FiberLase GYN handpiece set as part of its product expansion plans for the company’s FiberLase family of CO2 laser fibres.
Extending the use of AcuPulse 40WG and AcuPulse DUO CO2 laser systems, the new device provides precision and durability to the surgeons in addressing the gynaecological problems in women.
FiberLase GYN handpiece set consists of two individual handpieces, the GYN LAP-R and GYN LAP-S.
Available with a curved tip and thicker body, the 340mm GYN LAP-R handpiece allows surgeons to operate using the fibre through a 5mm trocar cannula.
The 460mm GYN LAP-S straight handpiece comes with a smaller handle and it allows surgeons to introduce the fibre into the operative field through a suction irrigator.
The renewable tip and the adjustable, clear aiming beam of the FiberLase family brings CO2 fibre technology directly into the abdominal cavity surgery site. According to the company, this provides unparalleled energy transmittance and is ideal for gynaecological surgery.
Northside Hospital minimally invasive surgery programme director Dr Ceana Nezhat noted treating endometriosis lesions on critical intra-abdominal structures, such as the bowel, bladder, ureter and major blood vessels, faces challenges in avoiding perforations, minimising risk of adhesion formation and other potential complications.
"Using CO2 laser fibres during laparoscopic procedures enables us to precisely target the desired treatment areas with markedly reduced thermal damage to surrounding tissues; it is the wave of the future in minimally invasive gynecological surgery," Dr Nezhat added.
Lumenis surgical business unit vice president and general manager Elad Benjamin noted CO2 laser surgery has been shown to be associated with low incidence of post operative pain and recurrent disease as well as low complication rates.
"The CO2 laser energy delivered by the FiberLase and the new GYN handpieces brings this outstanding precision and safety of the CO2 wavelength to the use of gynecological surgeons worldwide," Benjamin said.
Lumenis is launching the new FiberLase GYN handpiece set at the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy, held between 16 and 19 October 2013, in Berlin, Germany.
