Medtronic has announced the US and Canada launch of its real-time navigation system, designed for determining the proper location to place left-ventricular (LV) electrode leads for cardiac resynchronisation therapy pacemakers and defibrillators (CRT-P and CRT-D).

The CardioGuide implant system, which generates 3D images of cardiac veins for LV lead placement, features 3D imaging software that projects a ‘roadmap’ and the targeted lead placement onto an overlay of the patient’s heart.

The solution also tracks the real-time location of the electrodes within the body using fluoroscopy, and enables the implanting physician to confirm that the lead is placed in the targeted location.

The device also features a physician monitor that displays the system inside the procedure room or cath lab, and a tablet computer comprising a touch screen and stylus is used as a tableside console in the procedure room.

Markers included in the system are placed on the patient’s chest to automatically calibrate the system.

Medtronic said the system is also compatible with all its CRT devices including the Viva / Brava portfolio.

Medtronic cardiac rhythm disease management business medical director and heart failure vice president and general manager Dr David Steinhaus said; "This is yet another example of our commitment to offering physicians the most advanced medical technology available to help improve CRT response and ensure the best quality of care for all heart failure patients."

The company said a new software version for the system that also analyses the motion of select cardiac vessels on the left side of the heart will be available later in 2013.

Medtronic said it has a licensing agreement with Paieon for the global commercialisation of the CardioGuide system.
