Proa Medical has been granted patents for its first single-use device, Brella Vaginal Retractor, in China and Russia.

The company was granted a US patent for its device from the United States Patent and Trademark Office on 9 June 2015.

In approximately half of all deliveries, repair of vaginal and perineal lacerations secondary to childbirth is said to be among the most frequently performed surgical procedures worldwide.

"The issuance of these patents confirms the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office’s and Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property’s recognition that the Brella represents a new and innovative medical device."

The Brella Vaginal Retractor is used in hospitals’ labour and delivery departments for hands-free retraction and deep illumination.

Featuring a canopy design incorporating a bright, deep light source, the Brella Vaginal Retractor device is used to provide optimal visualisation and access during vaginal or perineal wound repair.

The built-in light source is designed to provide a clear and unobstructed view of the vaginal walls and surrounding structures.

Currently, the company is also pursuing patent protection for its device portfolio in several other countries.
