UK-based Sanius Health’s artificial intelligence (AI) platform for vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) is able to forecast crises in sickle cell disease (SCD) patients.

In real-world validation studies, the platform forecast crises with up to 92% sensitivity, but CEO Orlando Agrippa said there is more work to be done.

VOCs are a form of chronic pain experienced by individuals living with SCD. Brought on by factors including dehydration, changes in temperature, or overexertion, VOCs constrain SCD patients’ ability to breathe and can prove life-threatening.

Speaking with Medical Device Network, Agrippa shared that over the past three years, the company has analysed data, including patient medical records, therapies, and biometrics, to determine what solution it can create to help predict when a VOC may next happen to an SCD patient. Through this data, Sanius’s AI-powered system has been trained to apply daily risk scores to patients, to forecast the likelihood of an impending VOC.

“Throughout this time, we have accelerated our vision towards developing a digital companion for patients, caregivers, and health systems to be able to have a better barometer of when things might start to deteriorate,” Agrippa explained.

Sanius is now focused on refining its AI models further, with plans to make its app ‘Sanius Health (SCD)’ more accessible globally.

“We are also thinking about how we invest in other AI models, because one of the things that we’ve got is extensive data to help us train models faster and refine our assumptions in real time,” Agrippa said.

“Our big focus now is on how we give access to more people, and how we can evolve what we have developed so far in order for our platform to become closer to a companion for people living with SCD.”

In this sense, Agrippa stated that Sanius is focusing on what other areas it can invest in and apply AI to empower patients to better use their 10-minute GP slots to express a deeper insight into what’s been happening to them in between contact.

Agrippa continued: “From an AI perspective, we are focused on how we can continuously evolve the way that patients and humans want to interact with this type of technology, to make it more automatic than manual, and we’re excited to continue our work on closing that gap.

“What I’m keen to be able to do is to help patients get to that sort of ‘Hey Siri’ type position with the preventative care tools we’re continuing to build.”
