RapidPulse has secured $48m in a Series B funding round to advance the clinical development of its aspiration technology for the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke.

The funds are set to support the ongoing Thrombectomy Using Pulsed Aspiration for Reperfusion of Brain Occlusions (TURBO) study, which is assessing the system as a potential approach to improve clot removal in stroke patients.

The round attracted significant investor interest and was co-led by Medtronic, TechWald Next, and S3 Ventures.

Additional participation came from Florida Opportunity Fund and SBI Investment Company, and existing investors Hatteras Venture Partners, Santé Ventures, Epidarex Capital, and Syntheon.

The new capital will enable completion of the investigational device exemption trial and further expand its patented technology platform which consists of a range of catheter sizes.

The study is currently underway in the US and several European countries.

RapidPulse CEO Sean McBrayer said: “This financing enables us to complete the TURBO study, expand clinical experience across leading stroke centres, and data permitting, seek FDA approval for the RapidPulse system.

“We are particularly encouraged by the support of both leading financial investors and one of the largest medical technology companies in the world, Medtronic, reflecting growing recognition of the potential impact of our approach to stroke treatment.”

TechWald Next CEO Alessandro Piga said: “We evaluated a broad range of emerging stroke technologies and believe RapidPulse represents one of the most compelling innovation opportunities in the field. The company combines differentiated technology, strong intellectual property, and an experienced leadership team.
