Hill-Rom Holdings has launched the Monarch airway clearance system, a new mobile respiratory care solution.

Based on the firm’s Vest system, the Monarch device offers high-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO) therapy in a mobile, customisable and personalised vest.

Contrary to other vests that require connection to a generator and the patient to be seated, the new device uses personal oscillating discs (PODs) to supply kinetic energy and HFCWO to the lungs, and thin mucus.

Monarch generates an airflow that facilitates the movement of mucus up and out of the lungs.

Hill-Rom front line care president Alton Shader said: “We know that consistent respiratory therapy improves lung function.

“The Monarch system gives patients more control to fit therapy into their lives and to actively stay on track with therapy goals.”

“The Monarch system gives patients more control to fit therapy into their lives and to actively stay on track with therapy goals.”

Hill-Rom partnered with inventor and cystic fibrosis patient Marten DeVlieger to design the Monarch airway clearance system.

DeVlieger said: “I wanted to create a portable, long-lasting battery-powered device that clears the lungs so patients are free to be outside, go camping, and live a fuller, higher quality of life.

The system features LTE or Wi-Fi technology that enables a wireless connection to a patient’s care team via the firm’s VisiView Health Portal.

The VisiView Health Portal is employed to increase communication between healthcare teams and patients and was introduced in April last year.

The secure, cloud-based portal receives information automatically from respiratory care devices.
