Japanese optics and reprography products maker Olympus has introduced its newest surgical visualisation platform, VISERA ELITE III, for endoscopic surgery.

The new platform has been designed to address the needs of healthcare professionals (HCPs) in relation to endoscopic procedures across multiple medical disciplines.

It provides several imaging functions in a single system that supports minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic colectomy.

The company stated that software updates in the future will further advance surgical imaging technology and enable personalised configurations to support various surgical applications, which will reduce investment costs.

The new VISERA ELITE III system combines the VISERA 4K UHD system’s 4K imaging feature and the VISERA ELITE II system’s 3D and infrared imaging features.

Additionally, the platform supports the Olympus-developed narrow band imaging (NBI) technique as well as fluorescence-guided surgery.

It supports standardisation and boosts efficiency in the operating room by providing surgeons with a variety of observation modes.

Compatible with current VISERA ELITE II endoscopes, the new surgical visualisation platform allows users to create personalised departmental profiles for various medical disciplines, such as ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery, urology, gynaecology, general surgery and many others, said Olympus.

Olympus Surgical Endoscopy global head Kanichi Matsumoto said: “With VISERA ELITE III, we provide a best-in-class surgical visualisation platform designed for multiple medical specialities and configurations, allowing HCPs to fully focus on the patient during surgery.

“By incorporating the technologies of its predecessors VISERA ELITE II and VISERA 4K UHD into one platform, VISERA ELITE III enhances the quality of endoscopic surgery, contributes to improved efficiency in the operating room, and hereby elevates the standard of care.”

The new platform features an extended depth of field (EDOF) function and focus-adjustment mode for 4K surgical observation.

This enables accurate endoscopic observations through continuous broad focus and seamless magnification.

VISERA ELITE III also has a continuous autofocus (C-AF) capability, which automatically adjusts the focus according to the endoscope and camera head movements, consistently enabling a clearer image capture.

It combines Olympus’ medical product development experience with Sony’s advanced digital imaging technology to meet the increasing needs of hospitals.

The new VISERA ELITE III surgical visualisation system will be available in the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Europe, some regions of Asia, Japan and Oceania from this month or later.
