What is Financing?

Financing recognises companies and institutions that have raised significant capital during the research period whether it be through corporate finance, the capital markets or fund raising.

This includes any significant raising of finance by a company within the sector, this can include corporate lending, funding rounds and equity and debt capital markets issues including share offers and bond issues. We will be specifically looking at high value deals; novel structures; and companies using (for them) new forms of financing such as high-yield bonds.

Themes

Financial activity in the sector has been revolving around several key themes. 

Financing in the medical device field has been flowing first and foremost towards the diagnostics and treatment of COVID. One interesting development in this vein has been the funding and introduction of AI-designed Covid-19 drugs. 

Funds have also been flowing towards the development of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease drugs. Companies have particularly sought funding for the development of new biopsy assays.

In terms of funding for technological RnD, investors have been focusing on monitoring and diagnostic devices, with particular interest in home diagnostics as a result of the pandemic. 

Companies and lending institutions have also shown interest in the possible use of psychedelics as a treatment option for many mental illnesses.
