The total number of robotics-related grants rose by 12% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Robotics in Medical Devices – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the medical industry was 226 in Q3 2022, versus 450 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 12% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Johnson & Johnson filed the most robotics patents within the medical industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 8 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 5 in the previous quarter. It was followed by CMR Surgical with 7 robotics patent filings, Robocath (5 filings), and Intuitive Surgical (4 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 43% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the medical industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 43%, followed by China (11%) and South Korea (7%). The share represented by the US was 9% higher than the 34% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
