Medtronic has announced the results from a retrospective study of its Aquamantys system that demonstrated the efficacy in limiting blood loss and reducing transfusions during spinal corrective surgery.
The Aquamantys 2.3 bipolar sealer utilises Transcollation technology, a proprietary combination of radiofrequency (RF) energy and saline, to facilitate hemostatic sealing of soft tissue and bone during surgery.
The study, supported in part by Salient Surgical Technologies, involved 176 consecutive corrective spinal surgeries for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis – 100 using the Aquamantys 2.3 bipolar sealer and 76 without the Aquamantys sealer.
It found that with the use of the Aquamantys 2.3 bipolar sealer, estimated blood loss (EBL) was reduced by 57% and estimated blood loss per level fused by 59%.
