Indian start-up 30M Genomics has developed a new technology called AmpReady for extracting DNA from biological sample in five seconds without requiring any equipment.

30M Genomics, which focuses on point-of-care genetic diagnostics, was incubated at Association for Scientific Pursuits for Innovative Research Enterprises (ASPIRE)-BioNEST at the University of Hyderabad (UoH).

A single vial of reagent, AmpReady works with addition of the recommended quantity of biological sample and mixing well for extracting DNA.

It can be used with any biological sample, including human, animal, plant or microbes.

The extracted DNA sample can be used for downstream applications such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative PCR (qPCR) and isothermal assays.

The simple and eco-friendly extraction process does not produce solid or liquid wastes and cuts down the plasticware usage, UoH noted.

Furthermore, the AmpReady technology needs minimal sample quantity and is suitable for various point-of-care DNA-based applications.

Major research institutes as well as diagnostics labs across the country have validated the technology.

30M Genomics plans to validate the potential of AmpReady in extracting RNA from Covid-19 samples, as it was found to effectively extract plant RNA from leaf and seeds.

The founders of 30M Genomics, Dr Benet Dhas, PSKN Pavani and Yaswanth Reddy, worked for two years for developing the recipe of the reagent and validate it.

Technical and mentorship support for developing and marketing this product were provided by ASPIRE BioNEST.

BioNEST is managed by ASPIRE, a not-for-profit organisation that also oversees all incubation and innovation processes in the university.

Currently, there are 25 incubates and ASPIRE BioNEST provides incubation services primarily to start-ups that are working on addressing medical needs, protection of the environment, agricultural innovations, human wellness and animal ethics, among others.
