It is intended to minimise the time and risks associated with moving the infants to an external facility where conventional MRI scanners are usually present.

The system’s self-shielded feature negates the need for special shielded room and expansive floor space.

Aspect Imaging chief commercial officer Wendy Slatery said: “We are thrilled to be bringing the Embrace Neonatal MRI System to Canada.

“This installation represents a significant advancement in neonatal imaging capabilities for SickKids, reinforcing our shared dedication to enhancing patient care and outcomes in the most fragile patient population within the NICU.”

The Embrace system joins the hospital’s extensive diagnostic toolkit, enabling medical professionals to treat youngest patients.

The FDA 510(k) cleared Embrace Neonatal MRI system allows scanning of infants anytime, within minutes to provide critical information for quicker diagnosis and treatment. This helps in reducing the risks associated with off-unit transport.

Designed for babies weighing between 1kg and 4.5kg, the system can be used to scan intubated infants without the need for disconnection and reconnection of the tubing.

Furthermore, the system takes less than one hour to prepare and scan. It features a permanent magnet that eliminates the need for electrical, cryogenic or water cooling.
