Eurofins has launched GSD NovaPrime SARS-CoV-2 Direct RT-PCR, a new ultra-fast extraction-free RT-PCR method, which is intended for the qualitative detection of SARS-CoV-2.

The method is used for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 from human nasopharyngeal swabs eluted directly into deionised water without an additional RNA extraction process.

It is a multiplex real-time PCR assay with CE-IVD marking and is used for the direct qualitative pathogen detection of the coronavirus.

The rise in global SARS-CoV-2 testing has posed new challenges for laboratories in almost all countries.

Now, there is a critical requirement to increase testing capacity and provide accurate and faster results.

Eurofins noted that the removal of the RNA extraction step helps to meet the challenge while allowing more tests to be performed and reduce the cost, labour, and time required to carry out the sensitive PCR tests.

The GSD NovaPrime SARS-CoV-2 Direct RT-PCR has been validated as an extraction-free method and also helps to minimise the complete turnaround time of the test while providing the results in approximately one hour.

The company has also upgraded the device for use with pharynx gargle and saliva sample matrices, which constitute an easy-to-use sampling method that is mainly useful for self-sampling applications and is also suitable for children.

The test is intended for the qualitative determination of SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNA in respiratory samples. The RT-PCR assay simultaneously detects two target sequences inside the N gene.

In November last year, Eurofins had launched GSD NovaPrime SARS-CoV-2 Mplex FLA (Sanger) for Covid-19 testing.
