Johnson & Johnson (J&J) MedTech’s DePuy Synthes has launched its MatrixSternum plate and screw fixation system in the US.
The fixation system is used to help stabilise and secure the front part of the chest wall following procedures such as open-heart surgery and chest surgeries. DePuy touts that the MatrixSternum system is three-times stronger than the market-leading product. According to the company, it also features 1.5mm-thin low-profile plates, along with multi-hole screw guides to reduce procedure time.

GlobalData expects the global market for orthopaedic devices to grow from being worth approximately $52.5bn in 2023 to more than $70.5bn by 2033. The trauma fixation segment of the market is expected to grow from $7.5bn to more than $8.7bn during the same time. DePuy Synthes is an industry leader in the US trauma fixation device space with just under half of the market share.
Another chest fixation device on the market is Able Medical’s Valkyrie RIB system. In January 2024, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the device‘s use for stabilising and fixing fractures in the chest such as in sternal reconstructive surgical procedures, planned osteotomies and trauma fractures to the chest wall.
DePuy Synthes has been steadily expanding its portfolio. In August alone, the company launched two other devices – the Trileap foot plating system and a Velys spine robotic assist system. The Trileal lower extremity anatomic titanium plating system can be used for forefoot and midfoot reconstructive and trauma procedures for the fixation and fusion of bones and bone fragments in adults and adolescents.
The Velys spine robotic assist system is a dual-use robotics and stand-alone navigation platform. The device is part of the Velys robotic assist platform and is designed for use in cervical, thoracolumbar and sacroiliac spinal fusion procedures.
