Anthropic has introduced Claude for Healthcare, a suite of artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools to assist healthcare providers, payers, and patients in conjunction with the kick-off of this year’s J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference.

The AI company’s Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)-compliant toolkit is designed to connect its Claude AI assistant to a range of data repositories to make healthcare information easier to find, access, and understand.

At the new offering’s core is Connectors, which links Claude to data repositories including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Coverage Database and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10).

Claude for Healthcare’s launch follows OpenAI’s announcement of ChatGPT for Healthcare on 8 January, a comparable toolkit that is already rolling out to institutions including Boston Children’s Hospital and the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

According to Anthropic, the CMS database Connector means Claude will be able to verify locally accurate coverage requirements, support prior authorisation checks, and help build stronger claims appeals. This is forecasted to help revenue cycle, compliance, and patient-facing teams work more efficiently with Medicare policy.

Meanwhile, connecting to the ICD-10 gives Claude the ability to look up diagnosis and procedure codes to support medical coding, billing accuracy, and claims management.

Anthropic asserted that connecting Claude to large databases will speed up reviews of prior authorisation requests for payers and providers and support claims appeals.

Claude is intended to collate data such as claims reviews but and can also offer guidance into fulfilling specific actions. For example, Anthropic highlighted that connecting Claude to the CMS’s coverage database, the assistant can pull coverage requirements from CMS or custom policies, check clinical criteria against patient records, and propose determinations with supporting materials for a payer’s review.

Connecting Claude with patient health records and lab results

A further tool included in Anthropic’s Claude for Healthcare toolkits integrates the AI with patients’ electronic healthcare records (EHR) to give patients insights based on their health records through natural language conversations.

HealthEx announced during JPM 2026 that it has become the first consumer health record integration for Claude, with Apple Health and Android Health Connect integrations set to roll out in beta this week via the Claude iOS and Android apps.

Elaborating on the partnership with HealthEx, Anthropic product lead, Amol Avasare said: “HealthEx lets people bring their health records into a conversation with Claude and ask important questions in everyday language – what does this lab result mean, what should I bring up with my doctor, how has this number changed over time – and get answers grounded in their own health history.”

Anthropic highlighted that this tool resonates with the CMS’s efforts to create a more accessible healthcare ecosystem by connecting federal interoperability infrastructure directly to AI capabilities.

The Advanced Medical Technology Association (AdvaMed) expressed support for the initiative as outlined by US health secretary Robert F Kennedy (RFK) Jr, with CEO Scott Whitaker asserting that greater access to patients’ protected health information (PHI) would “promote the personalised, precise medtech design, utilisation, and care patients deserve”.

However, some observers hold concerns around potential security risks if the CMS’s initiative is rushed out too quickly.

The introduction of Claude for Healthcare follows Anthropic’s Claude for Lifesciences. Announced in October, the prior toolkit aims to increase Claude’s utilisation in the life sciences sector. End users include researchers, clinical coordinators, and regulatory affairs managers.
