US-based neurotechnology company Brain State Technologies has presented a study which discusses the benefits of a wearable neurotechnology device for military personnel to address post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The device will be designed to optimise the sleep quality of individuals suffering from trauma.
Studies suggest that PTSD is characterised by disturbed sleep which is one of the most difficult symptoms to treat.
Additionally, sleep disturbance is also held attributive to the onset of PTSD.
Brain State Technologies founder and CEO Lee Gerdes said: "The relationship between sleep problems and post-traumatic stress is highly intimate, probably even at the level of individual neurons.

The company has collaborated with the Department of Neurology at Wake Forest School of Medicine for a research which stated a strategic approach of addressing sleep disturbance which will combat PTSD in the soldiers who will be deployed into the warzone.
The research was done on the basis of reviewing a study of military service members who were engaged in Iraq after the 9/11 incident.
Brain State Technologies Director of Research Dr Sung Lee said: “We think that focus on sleep quality could reduce PTSD not only in the military, but also in police, medical first-responders, and others who have high exposure to trauma."
Last year, the company developed the wearable technology, which was partially supported by the US Army Research Office.
