German firm Carl Zeiss Meditec has launched its next-generation ultra-widefield (HD UWF) fundus imaging system, CLARUS 500, in the US for high-definition (HD) retinal imaging.

The new system features true colour imaging clarity from the macula to far periphery, allowing detection of ocular diseases.

Colour accuracy is considered crucial for the diagnosis of ocular diseases as minute colour differences in optic disc, nevi and lesions might result in the alteration of disease diagnosis and management.

Focal change assessment in rim tissue, nerve pallor, dry age-related macular degeneration RPE pigment changes and drusen is known to require precise colouration and resolution.

The CLARUS 500 system is said to combine ultra-widefield view across the whole retina with high-quality conventional fundus photography that is used for optic nerve and macula imaging.

Carl Zeiss Meditec Ophthalmic Devices global president Jim Mazzo said: “Clinicians are finding that by imaging a larger area of the retina, they have the possibility of uncovering more pathology, aiding in earlier disease diagnosis and better patient management.

“By imaging a larger area of the retina, they have the possibility of uncovering more pathology, aiding in earlier disease diagnosis and better patient management.”

“With ZEISS CLARUS, they can better manage a broader range of patients with one fundus imaging system.”

The system is designed to generate a 133° HD widefield image with a single capture, while widefield images automatically merge to create a 200° ultra-widefield of view.

CLARUS 500 technology enables easy review and comparison of images, while its annotation and caliper measurement tools facilitate in-depth eye health analysis.

For multi-modality analysis, the device can be integrated with ZEISS FORUM and Retina Workplace to review its images with other ophthalmic images and exam data.

The system can also carry out peripheral imaging without losing resolution when zooming in on the retina.
