Atlas System

Moximed has released its first clinical data presentations for its Atlas System, a unicompartmental joint unloading device for pre-arthroplasty knee osteoarthritis (OA) patients, which reported pain relief and regained range of motion in patients.

A multi-centre study involving 26 patients has exhibited that Atlas System offers rapid, clinically effective pain relief while ensuring safety amongst patients afflicted with early knee OA in the pre-arthroplasty stage of their disease.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common form of arthritis affecting the hands, knees, hips, feet and spine.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 27 million adults in the US are being affected by the degenerative disease.

Carolina Clinic in Warsaw MD and Polish Olympic team doctor Robert Smigielski said: "We are seeing increasing numbers of younger patients with knee osteoarthritis who are looking for pain relief and the ability to get back to their active lifestyles.

"The data from our study show that these patients could benefit from the Atlas System and its joint unloading and joint preserving approach."

Several other studies on Atlas System conducted by surgeons have also reported positively on the technology.

The Atlas System is an implantable joint unloader for patients with medial knee osteoarthritis.

It is implanted subcutaneously alongside the knee joint and it incorporates advanced biomaterials designed to provide a clinically beneficial 13kg of unloading.

"The data from our study show that these patients could benefit from the Atlas System and its joint unloading and joint preserving approach."

The Atlas System absorbs excess joint load rather than transfering load to otherwise healthy areas of the joint.

The Atlas System features a streamlined surgical technique modelled on the patient’s own anatomy enabling the surgeon to visually confirm that functional joint unloading is achieved.

It is a joint preserving, reversible procedure allowing patients to have future treatment options available to them if their OA becomes severe.

The Atlas system has secured its CE mark in Europe; however it is yet to be approved for sale in the US.
