US-based medical and surgical products designer Olympus has announced the commercial availability of its next-generation Endocapsule 10 system, a 510(k) cleared device designed for small bowel capsule endoscopy procedures.
The FDA cleared capsule endoscopy incorporates an advanced Olympus lens technology and sensitive, high-resolution image sensor technology to provide clear and vivid imaging results for fine observation of a variety of abnormalities in the small bowel.

The expanded angle of view from 145° to 160° offers a significantly enhanced field of observation for refined examinations than the other capsule endoscopy products.
In addition, the new system offers a long 12-hour battery life to maximise the amount of images taken and improve exam completion rates.
The intelligent software automatically detects images that require closer analysis and indicates the location of detected abnormalities.
The capsule’s position in the body is displayed by a 3D tracking function as it moves through the intestine.

By GlobalDataOlympus Corporation of the Americas president of the medical systems group Luke Calcraft said the new Endocapsule 10 system offers advanced, minimally invasive technology designed to improve diagnostic capabilities, procedural efficiency and patient comfort.
"The system can help facilities fulfil the requirements of healthcare reform aimed at improving quality of care, decreasing costs and enhancing patient satisfaction," Calcraft said.
In addition, the system also features improvements that increase ease-of-use for clinicians and patients.
The system features a lighter and more compact recorder unit that can be worn over clothes rather than applied directly to the skin, while the images can be viewed in real time or can be downloaded later to the system’s workstation.
The Endoscapsule 10 system has been showcased at Digestive Disease Week (DDW), held 3-6 May 2014 in Chicago, Illinois.
According to GlobalData estimates, the capsule endoscope systems market was valued at $93.4m in 2012 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.5% to reach $165.2m by 2019.
