US-based life sciences products developer Sage Science has introduced a new platform 'SageHLS' to extract and purify large DNA fragments directly from cell sources such as bacterial and tissue cultures or blood samples.

The SageHLS platform is claimed to provide high-quality, long fragments required for resolving haplotypes, structural variants, and other large or linked genomic elements, by enabling scientists to purify DNA into fragments ranging from 50 kilobases to 2 megabases.

The new platform addresses the concern with traditional sample preparation processes that cannot capture optimal information from long-read and long-range sequencing, optical mapping, droplet digital PCR, and single-molecule tools.

Sage Science chief executive officer Todd Barbera said: “We believe that access to DNA molecules hundreds of kilobases or even megabases long will allow scientists to embrace advanced genomic technologies and reveal new insights about how large DNA elements influence disease and other phenotypes.

“The SageHLS platform can purify DNA in sizes that no other tool can consistently handle.”

The scientists at certain academic medical institutions have conducted a beta testing of the platform to extract DNA as long as 2 megabases as well as to purifiy specific genomic fragments with CRISPR/Cas9.

The SageHLS platform will be able to recover at least a microgram of DNA for most samples, which is considered as a sufficient volume for common genome applications.
