French oral developer Tongue Lab has initiated a clinical trial of its Tongue Right Positioner (TRP) to aid patients with chronic snoring in Prague, Czech Republic.

TRP is an oral, custom-fitted medical device designed to recondition the tongue to restore its physiological functions and position for improving the muscle tone.

The tongue positioning device is expected to minimise or completely eliminate snoring.

The clinical trial will evaluate the effects of wearing TRP during sleep in 35 men and women diagnosed as chronic snorers over a period of nine months, during which the subjects’ snoring levels will be checked every three months.

Tongue Lab founder and president Jean-Michel Mauclaire said: "The TRP was invented by Dr Claude Mauclaire, a pioneering orthodontist who's been studying the impact of training the tongue for more than 40 years.

"The clinical study we're launching today could enable Tongue Lab and its partners to offer an effective and lasting solution to the hundreds of millions of people around the world who snore."

“Her initial goal was to avoid a relapse of the orthodontic conditions she'd successfully treated. Using the TRP, her patients experienced other benefits as well.

Snoring is said to be associated with dysfunctions of the tongue leading to lingual muscle tone depletion, loosening of pharyngeal tissue, and a decrease in the pharynx’s width.

Developed to address these lingual dysfunctions that might cause sleep breathing disorders, TRP is said to not put artificial pressure on the teeth, upper airways and pharynx.
