Palomar Health and the University of San Diego (USD) have entered a partnership to establish wellness initiatives for USD students and the wider San Diego community.

The centrepiece of the new partnership will be the naming of the Palomar Health Student Wellness Center at USD. According to the university, the 80,000ft² facility, which is due to open in January 2025, will set a new standard for inclusive wellness resources and NCAA Division One basketball practice facilities for the university’s student-athletes.

Provisions at the facility will include spaces in which students can find connections between physical activity, diet and nutrition, and mental health to meet the needs of the university and its surrounding community for holistic wellness resources.

With a teaching kitchen at the facility, USD also plans to establish student programmes including nutrition workshops and healthy cooking classes.

The partnership between Palomar Health and USD comes at a time when recent research by the American College Health Association (ACHA) has found that roughly 24% of US college students are classifiable as overweight. Meanwhile, around 21% of US college students surveyed in the ACHA’s latest National College Health Assessment (NCHA) reported that depression had impeded their academic performance throughout the autumn 2023 academic period.

USD president James T Harris said: “Partnering with Palomar Health will set a new standard of inclusive wellness. The new facility will ensure our students nourish their mind, body, and soul while developing intellectually throughout their studies at USD.”

The healthcare service provider intends to arrange placement opportunities for marriage and family therapy students from USD’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences and for nursing students from USD’s Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science.

Palomar Health CEO and president Diane Hansen commented: “Our work with USD represents our dedication to reimagining a culture of proactive health, lifelong learning and community empowerment.”
