Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is set to unveil its AI-based remote patient monitoring technology at CES 2025, taking place in Las Vegas, US from 7 to 11 January.

Developed in partnership with Taiwan-based artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) provider StreamTeck, the High-Privacy AI Digital Caregiver uses millimetre-wave radar technology and thermal imaging to detect patient vitals – including body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure – and inactivity or patient falls, without the need for any wearables.

The system automatically transmits data via a mobile app and uses AI models to classify trends and alert caregivers when abnormalities in vital signs or movement such as patient bed exits are detected.

According to ITRI, the system provides accuracy comparable to hospital equipment. From testing 50 of its units at a long-term care facility in Taipei City, the company found that the system achieved an accuracy of <±2 bpm for respiratory rate, <5% for heart rate, <±0.3°C for body temperature, <±2% for blood oxygen, and maintained a 90% accuracy rate for blood pressure trends.

ITRI added that without the use of cameras for remote monitoring, patient privacy is enhanced, while the thermal imaging system may provide superior monitoring functionality in low-light conditions in comparison to camera-based monitoring systems.

GlobalData market analysis forecasts that the global patient monitoring market will reach a valuation of around $15bn by 2033. According to GlobalData’s medical device pipeline database, as of April 2024, 246 remote patient monitoring devices were in various stages of development worldwide.

In addition to its remote patient monitoring system, ITRI will also be showcasing several other products at CES 2025, including MedBobi, a smart medical assistant system that uses multimodal genAI and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology to create medical reports from voice input and other data, and Janus, an AI-powered cybersecurity tool.

GlobalData analysis indicates that ITRI currently has nine products in various stages of active development, including a handheld ultrasound system and a miniaturised endobronchial probe.

Other companies poised to showcase products at CES 2025 include Scotland-based Novosound with its wearable ultrasound blood pressure monitor, and Canada-based Human In Motion Robotics with its XoMotion medical exoskeleton.
